Nocturnal Sarai i "twilight trails" and iii "eclipse by moon"
Bradlye Davdi Lycan -- composer

Nocturnal Sarai “twilight trails” originated from my 2015 piano improvisation I played and recorded among several others during that time, some of which appear on the 4-piece Nocturnal Sarai album. I performed these piano pieces on a digital Kurzweil piano using the Synthogy Ivory virtual piano instrument, recorded to Logic DAW. The Winter season of 2022 and early 2023, I orchestrated these 4 piano improvisation piano pieces by adding new keyboard instrument tracks using Kurzweil K2600 sound samples along with EastWest Sounds, Vienna, Native Instruments, Sweetwater Music sound libraries for Kurzweil K2600, and Eduardo Tarilonte virtual sound libraries. (I will one day go back to update orchestrated sounds on the Nocturnal Sarai album with Moog, Quantum ii, and Sequential synthesizers along with more Eduardo Tarilonte virtual sound libraries. )

Todd Wilkinson created and performs his tracks on soprano saxophone. Stan Kessler created and performs his tracks on trumpet. You can hear this album in it entirety on the web site: https://www.mysitemusic.com/

So, it’s looks like I have an album of my own here to show people — more than a “baker’s dozen.” Song Sketches 2016-2018 is an album collection of my original songs with me on piano writing, singing vocal tracks and recording to DAW audio files. These are the first vocal tracks with piano largely unedited. I will have to admit that the first 3 songs on this album above from 2016 are making some kind of social critique. Ok, so I threw in a few more of my classic numbers. Couldn’t help myself. Oh, well.

The songs “You Got Love,” “You Call me Love,” and “You Can Wait” all came in the same writing time period for me. This was a time that was the beginning of significant changes in my song writing. The song “You Got Love” is a special song for me, about my life at that time with my wife Barb and the other social contexts in my life as well as my busy job. Balancing my home life and my life in the world brought its stresses and challenges, along with new ventures and possibilities. Now, the songs “You Call me Love,” and “You Can Wait” were connected in some way, but of course, people’s lives are rarely as fulfilled or complete as they would prefer. Life’s complexities are often placed on a shelf with other artifacts of daily living. For me, I placed them into songs to share with others.

The songs “Whying” and “Love is a Gypsy” are a bit outside the norm, yet they are interesting pieces that came amidst my albums in 2016 and 2017.

“Once in Awhile” and “You Take me Away” came around the same time in late 2016 around the winter holidays. “Once in Awhile” reminds of my life emotion in my 20’s; “You Take me Away” showed me I had a sense of what the Blues were about. These 2 songs would transition my song writing to my 2017 song work. Whereas my 2014 and 2015 song writing was re-incubation from my early 40’s before my marriage, 2016 was a new vista that would allow me to move into the 2017 and 2018 years, which were no doubt my more prolific years on song writing.

So, in 2018 I had made the summit, so to speak — a place in my song writing I had set as a goal many years ago as a younger man in my 20’s. These years of living paved the way for me as a writer and piano player. The trials and challenges of daily living for 20 years after I was in my early 40’s had yielded my finest song work to date — songs I enjoyed, songs I am happy to have written.

“Do You Think,” “Fly Away Love,” and “You’re Still my Home” were among many songs in the 2018 albums I wrote one after the next. The 2017 and 2018 songs and albums all complement each other and tell about the last part of my journey on my road til then.

Where “Fly Away Love” captures the blue dusky days to somewhere else, “You’re Still my Home” expresses the soulful places that allow us, and that are there for us.

Since the Summer of 2019, I have a been producing and self publish collections of my songs, some of which are on this website.
